Noisy static, muffled percussion, and the warm hum of tape shrouds a nostalgic veil over the voice of Rachael, a replicant eager to pose a personal question to the listener. The tape machine then glitches, fails, and we are spaghettified back into reality, marking the beginning of “NH Reverie”, the title track to Guide01’s debut EP. With a rumbling kick, hissing hats, and face-smacking snares, the track establishes an aggressive tone that persists throughout the four-track release, signalling a new direction for the Sydney-based producer formerly known as “Guides”. In a thoughtful fusion of pain and bliss, Guide01 weaves a delicate Euclidian melody into the aural fabric of the song, accompanied by cloud-like pads that invite the listener to float endlessly along this hypnotic reverie. As the EP progresses, the gamut of textures widens, with “Cerca” offering an array of gritty bass, screaming leads, and time stretching effects that showcase the producer’s repertoire. Following this, fellow Sydney-sider Eastern Distributor makes an appearance with a skilful remix of “Cerca”, breaking away from the four to the floor and bringing yet more flavour to the release. Finally, “Lifeforms”, concludes the EP with an experimental jam on the untameable Pittsburgh synth that features in most of Guide01’s work.
